What to Do After a Car Accident in the UK: A Step-by-Step Guide

Guides · 18 June 2026 · 6 min read

Even a minor collision leaves most drivers shaken. But the actions you take in the first few minutes — and the details you record — can make the difference between a smooth claim and months of dispute. Here's a clear, practical checklist.

1. Stop, stay calm and make the scene safe

It's a legal requirement to stop after an accident. Switch on your hazard lights, and if it's safe to do so, move vehicles out of live traffic. Check whether anyone is injured — if so, call 999 immediately.

2. Exchange details

Get the other driver's name, address, phone number, vehicle registration and insurer. If they refuse, note the registration and report to the police within 24 hours. Never admit fault at the scene, even out of politeness — liability is decided on evidence, not apologies.

3. Gather evidence

Photograph everything: vehicle positions, damage to all vehicles, road markings, traffic signs, weather conditions and any debris. If there are witnesses, take their names and numbers. If you have a dashcam, save the footage straight away.

4. Call an accident management specialist

If the accident wasn't your fault, you don't have to claim through your own insurer, pay your excess or risk your no claims discount. An accident management company like Castle sets up your claim against the at-fault insurer — arranging recovery, a like-for-like replacement vehicle and approved repairs at no cost to you.

Our helpline is open 24/7 on 0208 981 4633. One call and everything is handled.
